Are you an expert in international human rights law with extensive experience in political advocacy, media engagement, and strategic campaigning? 

  • Permanent, Full-time opportunity
  • Preferred locations: Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane where we have offices, plus Canberra. Depending on experience, candidates from other capital cities may also be considered. (Hybrid WFH arrangements available) 

The role involves regular travel to Canberra during parliamentary sitting weeks. 


The Strategic Campaigner, International leads Amnesty International Australia’s international and crisis campaigns, requiring a strong mix of strategic, advocacy, and communications skills, along with deep knowledge of international human rights frameworks. 

This role is responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating strategic campaign and advocacy plans aligned with our People Powered Strategy and Strategic Priorities. 

As an expert in international human rights issues, the Strategic Campaigner provides guidance to staff teams, supporters, and external stakeholders. They are also a confident media spokesperson and public speaker, ensuring high visibility and impact for our campaigns. 

The role involves building and maintaining relationships with political decision-makers, government departments, thought leaders, and other key influencers to advance campaign objectives and drive meaningful human rights impact. 

Job Description

AS PART OF THIS ROLE, YOU WILL: 

  • Lead the development of strategic campaigns, with a strong focus on campaign strategy, advocacy, and external affairs.  
  • Represent Amnesty International Australia’s (AIA) campaigns to MPs, Ministers, departmental staff, diplomats, and institutions in a compelling, authoritative, and professional manner.  
  • Prepare high-quality written materials to support campaign and advocacy priorities, including briefs, submissions, speeches, letters, and media materials.  
  • Act as AIA’s key media spokesperson on international human rights issues.  
  • Embed AIA’s People Powered Strategy into advocacy efforts, ensuring impactful and inclusive campaign implementation.  
  • Commit to centering and amplifying the voices of people with lived experience in all aspects of campaigning and advocacy.  
  • Deliver work to a high standard, within agreed timelines, and in alignment with AIA’s vision and values.  
  • Champion diversity, inclusion, and wellbeing commitments in all aspects of the role.  

Desired Skills and Experience

TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL HAVE:

  • Strong knowledge of International Human Rights Law and International Humanitarian Law. 
  • Ability to represent AIA’s campaigns and human rights research to decision makers, departmental staff, diplomats and other influencers in an impactful, authoritative and professional manner. 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including writing submissions, briefing papers and the ability to represent the organisation in public contexts, including in the media. 
  • Understanding of Australian parliamentary processes and experience in developing government relations and advocacy strategies that deliver positive outcomes. 
  • Demonstrated experience in or commitment to working with communities with lived experience. 

SELECTION CRITERIA:

  1. How would others describe your collaboration and stakeholder management skills? 

  1. In approximately 300 words, identify the three most serious threats to global human rights. You may focus on specific issues, countries, or both.

The salary for this position is $114,774 (FTE) + super + not for profit salary packaging.
